Site Showcase: Bryden Giving Photographer
It's so rare we get a dark and moody site around here! We are loving the dark tones and really great custom additions to this beautiful site by the talented Jodi N. Make sure you check out the travel page, it's an incredible example of what you can do with Squarespace and a little bit of custom design :)
Client Site Description: Photography Portfolio
Template Chosen: Rally
Why did you choose that template?: The client was wanting full width images with parallax scrolling and the ability to customize the sections so I definitely needed a template that offered index pages. The Brine templates are my go to templates for ease of use and functionality as well.
What was the Client's Objective?: To showcase his photography portfolio for weddings, travel and portrait photography. He tells stories through his photos and he wanted a heavy emphasis on this on the site.
Tell us a bit about the design process?: The client had very definite ideas as to what he wanted - a dark moody site that really showcased his photography. We worked very closely through the design process to balance his requests with website best practices to come up with the final design.
How did you help the client differentiate their business through design?: Since his emphasis is on story telling, he wanted to make his blog posts very prominent. By highlighting them on the Home page in a big way as well as on the specific gallery pages, we were able to draw attention to these blog posts. We also incorporated a travel map on the travel gallery page and the About Me page to showcase the places he has captured stories at. This is an interactive map that links to the blog post from the map marker.
Is there custom development? What about custom added CSS? Can you tell us why you did or did not use these edits?: Yes, there are lots of custom edits. There are many hover effects, tweaks to the footer blocks and tweaks to image layout blocks.
What are the top three creative features you used in the design?:
1. The interactive map.
2. Dark moody colors and hover effects.
3. Full width images to showcase his gorgeous photos. Even the testimonials page was styled with full width images and a slideshow of the photoshoot with a link to the blog post to see the full shoot.
Anything else you want us to know about the site?: I used the Squarespace websites pro chrome tool not only to add the interactive map, but also to allow for lazy loading on summary gallery block to allow for more than 30 photos.
