Site Showcase: Deeann Rieves Fine Art
I've actually had a lot of inquiries lately for artists on squarespace. I think it's the more that see the potential the more that want in. This site will create a wave of new inspired artists ready to leap into the online world. The powerful photography is perfectly combined with the brush lettering to show the true essence of the brand. Isn't that what our job is... to perfectly portray our client's heart? Amazing job Nikkita!
Client's Site Description: Artist Shop & Portfolio
Template Chosen: Brine
Why did you choose that template?: This site is for an artist who makes a living selling her art, and the advanced commerce features of Brine were a big plus for her. We also wanted to feature a full-browser photo with the header overlaid on top.
What was the Client's Objective?: To showcase her artwork for sale beautifully
Tell us a bit about the design process?: Deeann Rieves has gathered a loyal following through Instagram by sharing her process and her beautiful artwork. The website needed to share her process in a similar way to engage collectors and allow them to enter into her story as well as her artwork. So the site needed to create an experience and evoke the feel of seeing her paintings in person.
How did you help the client differentiate their business through design?: The design takes elements of Deeann's work (embroidered line art, brushy strokes, in-process photos) and draws them out to accentuate the artwork and celebrate it. Rather than simply showcasing work, her homepage and process page give inside looks at how her work is made, how she works, and who she is as an artist. This is done through the photography and the pacing of the site.
Is there custom development? What about custom added CSS? Can you tell us why you did or did not use these edits?: We used CSS to add backgrounds to some homepage sections and behind the newsletter block to incorporate more elements of Deeann's work. We also adjusted typography and created collapsible questions and answers in the FAQ so it wouldn't overwhelm someone.
What are the top three creative features you used in the design?: Squarespace's new image features came along at just the right time to show off Deeann's commission process, to make the idea of working with her for custom art more approachable and understandable. Deeann and I worked together to create the beautiful home page photo (I provided art direction and specific areas that needed to remain clean to leave room for the header elements and she and her husband photographed it), and I love the way it came out. It's a gorgeous experience from the moment you visit her site. I also love the second section on the home page with her lovely stitching translated into a background graphic .
Anything else you want us to know about the site?:
Vendors used?: All artwork by Deeann Rieves and most photography, with additional photography by Morgan Blake Photography.
