Site Showcase: Kara Chappell Photography
I honestly have a soft-spot for family and newborn photographers websites since I started my graphic design career in that field, and boy do I wish I could have some of these sites for inspiration back then (I used to swear daily at wp). We love the earthy and organic colors that seem to just hug you from the moment you open up this beautiful site. Is there anything better for a family photographers site?
Client Site Description: Photography Portfolio
Template Chosen: Brine
Why did you choose that template?: While we considered other templates because of their specific features, my client and I ultimately decided to use Brine because of it's flexibility, functionality, use of index pages and how easy it would be to customize to match my client's vision perfectly!
What was the Client's Objective?: The client was looking for a fun and modern site that truly captured her personality, while showcasing her work and capturing leads.
Tell us a bit about the design process?: When we first started our work together, Kara had several branding elements in place (such as a logo and a limited color palette) but they lacked the "oomph" she needed to take her website and collateral to the next level. We expanded and enhanced her brand by adding a secondary color palette, patterns and more graphic details throughout.
From there, we moved to designing her website. Using wireframes and mockups, we designed the layout to highlight key details and formatted the site to specifically guide the user. From there, it was easy to code to the live site, place copy and images, and tweak until we got it perfect.
How did you help the client differentiate their business through design?: Kara is extremely talented and it shows in her work, so the photos were highlighted throughout the design to set her apart. Kara is also known for being approachable and friendly behind the camera, so we wanted the design (colors, textures, patterns) to reflect that asset of her personality as well!
Is there custom development? What about custom added CSS? Can you tell us why you did or did not use these edits?: Yes — so many custom edits! With plenty of CSS and a handful of plugins, we wanted to create a site that was far from cookie-cutter and truly stood out on its own. Some of the features we added were custom fonts and buttons, a customized newsletter opt-in, full-width carousels, testimonial sliders, and a sidebar on the blog page.
What are the top three creative features you used in the design?:
- Full-width carousels on the home and gallery pages
- Testimonial sliders used on the gallery pages
- Custom fonts and buttons to make the site truly unique
