Client Site Description: Design Portfolio
Template Chosen: Heights
Why did you choose that template?: I almost exclusively work in the Brine family now because of it's robust flexibility, but I chose this version of the family because the logo + navigation was already in the placement that I wanted and the main fonts were similar to the ones I wanted to use.
What was the Client's Objective?: This is my business website, so my overall goals are to explain my services, show off my work and ultimately get people to want to hire me.
Tell us a bit about the design process?: I redesigned my brand at the end of 2017 to reflect a more sophisticated style, while still coming off as bold so I wanted to reflect that in my website as well. After transitioning to freelancing full-time, my Squarespace skills also improved drastically and I needed a new site to show that off. I started with a logo design, color palette + some brand elements that gave the right feeling and then once I had a copywriter revamp my content I designed each page to highlight that and direct users to make an inquiry.
How did you help the client differentiate their business through design?: I wanted to show that I am a professional, but also that I stand out in a crowd. I used a bright, splashy background graphic for my main banners, large headlines and highlighted text to draw attention. A big goal of mine was to keep everything really bold with my new tagline (do BOLDER business by design).
Another thing I wanted to do to set myself apart, and that goes right in line with being bold, is to show more personality and attract fun people to work with. That was helped immensely by my dear copywriter who took my jumble of thoughts and laser focused it, while still making it sound like me.
Is there custom development? What about custom added CSS? Can you tell us why you did or did not use these edits?: So much CSS! It's hard to resist customizing EVERYTHING when it's your own site and I wanted to show off the skills that I have. I also wanted to show potential clients that even though you start with a beautiful template in Squarespace, when you work with me your site will look totally custom and we can change things that you normally wouldn't be able to on your own.
What are the top three creative features you used in the design?: 1. Overlapping elements - like the logo overlapping the main banner and photos overlapping text boxes.
2. Highlighted text - which I did by adding it to a headline link with CSS
3. Background textures and colors to help differentiate each section.
